Vice President of the Corona-Norco Unified School District Board of Education, John Zickefoose who is also widely known as “Mr. Z” throughout the community was featured on NBC for overcoming his drawback in knowing how to read and write.

Mr. Z’s personal story about his battle with being functionally illiterate until the age of 35, serves as a story of inspiration and encouragement for others who may share the same struggle. Mr. Z’s compelling story reveals how the shadow of self-doubt and personal circumstances contributed to his inability to read and write. What seemed to be simple day-to-day activities were huge obstacles for Mr. Z; from reading a menu, to writing a check and even reading a bedtime story to his kids.

Recognizing the importance of literacy in leading a fully functional life, Mr. Z sought help from the Corona Public Library through their adult reading program. From that point forward, Mr. Z’s passion for reading has transcended into the lives of many children in our community who have had the unique opportunity to experience Mr. Z’s animated story telling. In the candid interview with NBC Mr. Z expresses his passion for reading and promoting literacy in the community by saying, “…show the love of what is happening and coming through those books, someone did it for me, I need to do it for others.”
