Santiago JROTC Competes in National Youth Cyber Defense Competition

IMG_1728Corona, CA – Santiago High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is participating in the seventh season of CyberPatriot’s National Youth Cyber Defense Competition.  Beginning this past October 2014, 5 teams with a total of 23 cadets from the Santiago JROTC program have been competing in the All Service Division against over 500 similar teams across the world.  This is the first year Santiago High School has been competing. IMG_0706Residents at the Meridian Gardens Memory Care Facility in La Sierra have been enjoying outings to Vandermolen Elementary.  Coordinated by 3rd Grade Teacher Joellen Scotti and Library Clerk Mary Hauser, residents are brought to Vandermolen and are read to one-on-one by each off Mrs. Scotti’s students.  According to Mrs. Scotti, “My students are learning about aging in a supportive environment and our seniors have a sense of purpose. Hour of Code Brings Students Together

IMG_1070Computer Science Week is observed December 8th-12th and this year the challenge was to get 10 million students to participate in an “Hour of Code.”  Several CNUSD schools participated, but a unique opportunity was created for 5th Graders at Orange Elementary when they were invited to Santiago High School to have the opportunity to participate in this initiative.  In a Tweet about the program, Code.org states that one of the goals of Hour of Code and introducing kids to coding is, “to better prepare our youth to take control of technology, rather than be controlled by it.”  Tyler Hansel, 10th […]

Surprise delivered to Norco High’s Agricultural Department

IMG_1019On Thursday, December 11, 2014 students and staff at Norco High School’s agriculture department received a surprise delivery  from CNUSD’s maintenance department. The department restored the tractor that was once inoperable, the tractor was purchased new back in 1951 and has been used by Norco High School’s award winning Agriculture program ever since. Maintenance crews have been providing basic maintenance on the unit over the years to keep it in running condition.  Recently, the CNUSD Maintenance Department was asked to make a couple of repairs and freshen up the paint as the tractor would be pulling a float in the upcoming Norco […]

Stallings El. photo 2Dr. Tammy Strawser, students at Stallings Elementary, and Suzanne Keeler, Teacher on Special Assignment, presented on College and Career Readiness in Mathematics on Friday, December 5, 2014. This informational meeting provided a great opportunity for parents to ask questions, review sample lessons and get hands-on practice to better assist their children at home. Parker-Konop raneyCorona – Raney Intermediate 7th Grade Science and History Students had the opportunity to get hands on with Science and History this past month in a unique activity that combined two courses of study.  Lead by Science teacher Mr. Knox and World History teacher Mrs. Bond  collaborated on several projects that connected the two seemingly unconnected subjects. IMG_0872Retired teacher, Angela Butvich, and her daughter dedicate their time and their effort year round to give elementary students the opportunity perform in full scale production shows each year, for the past 10 years. Her shows are quite elaborate, often involving over 100 students.  This year’s production of “The Nutcracker” was held at Corona High School’s theatre for the first time to accommodate both the show and the audience. Santiago Art And FashionArt and Fashion Design Students from Santiago High School received the highest honors from Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Madison Smitely, JingWen Pu and Clare Bland recently were awarded the following for Scholastic’s Regional At Large which encorporates 10 Western States. Over 300,000 art and design entries were received and for the first time in a decade, these talented students were selected in top categories. TurangOne of Santiago High School’s freshman students was honored with a special award during  halftime at the Santiago-Roosevelt basketball game on Feb 12.    Last summer, Brice Turang competed on the USA Baseball’s 15U National team and was chosen as the USA Baseball’s Richard “Dick” Case–Player of the Year.  This marks the first time someone this young has ever won this award.
