Math Field Day was held on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Corona High School, with nearly 3,000 in attendance including students, parents and family members, teachers, community and high school student volunteers, district administrators, and Board Members. The all-day event was an exciting and fun-filled day for all. Dr. Adriana Burkhart shared that the students were thrilled to participate in our district’s Math Field Day. Events and games were rewritten this year in order to align each to the Common Core and included Calculator Challenge, Leap Frog, Mental Math, Number Sense, Construction Derby, 3D Tic-Tac-Toe, Hex, Capture, Mancala and 5-in-Row. A large dose of happiness descended upon Corona on Friday, February 6th from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Signs with positive messages like, “You’re enough!” and “Tell them you love them!” will be waved on Sixth Street in front of the Civic Center so that all those driving or walking by can be encouraged by a random act of kindness. Leading this charge will be students of Orange Grove High School as well as parents, CNUSD Board Members, and city council members. Corona High School’s Academic Decathlon team, advised by Lynette Menter-Hartman, finished in 4th place (out of 19 teams) at a recent Riverside County competition. This is a tremendous accomplishment, and deserving recognition for the hard-work put on by this team. In addition to the 4th place trophy overall, two students- Maddie Nguyen and Naz Chowhury- brought home Gold Medals for the Essay portion of this competition. Way to go! This year California students across the state, enrolled in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11, will take Smarter Balanced online assessments this spring. The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) creates “assessments that accurately measure student progress toward college and career-readiness.” To prepare for this new online mode of testing, CNUSD is increasing access to students computing by adding computer labs at our schools sites. Dozens of award-winning entries from students in 4th and 5th grade, junior (grades 6-8) and senior (grades 9-12) divisions were honored at the Riverside County History Day Competition held at Arlington High School on Saturday, March 14, 2015. The 53rd Annual Press-Enterprise Riverside County High School Art Show Awards reception was held on Thursday, April 16th at the Riverside Art Museum. The Art Show plays an important role in encouraging students across Riverside County High Schools to pursue their interests in the arts. On April 24, 2015 CNUSD was one of 11 eleven districts throughout the state to be recognized as a Model SARB (School Attendance Review Board) district. The 2014–15 Model School Attendance Review Board (SARB) Recognition Program, sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE) in cooperation with the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare and Attendance (CASCWA), recognized 11 school district and county-level SARBS for efforts to improve attendance and reduce dropout rates. How one high school is closing the AP gap If anyone knows the halls and classrooms of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Eastvale, California, it’s Adan Esperza. He’s been the head custodian at Roosevelt for nine years. Esperza’s son and daughter know these halls, too. They’re students at the high school — good students. Roosevelt High School has been honored with the California Gold Ribbon Schools Award, a program that was created to honor schools in place of the California Distinguished Schools Programs. Gleaming smiles and new NFL hats were proudly worn by three former Eleanor Roosevelt High School students from the class of 2010, all of which have signed with teams in the NFL. Austin Hill signed with the Seattle Seahawks, Josh Mitchell with the Indianapolis Colts and Tyler Slavin with the St. Louis Rams, this marks a significant moment for Roosevelt High School, its football program and the entire CNUSD community.
